Today's photo challenge reminded me that I needed to post a picture of the cable cars because San Franciscans are required to do that at least once a year. It's the law.

@BobHorowitz I love your sarcasm, Bob 😊
But the cars are really nice.
@BobHorowitz
I loved getting around the city on the cable cars.
@NorcalGma2 I do too. I love hanging off the sideboard.
@BobHorowitz nice shot! (also, 8 is a good number)
@exkclamation
Uh oh. Now the other numbers want to know why you singled 8 out.
Anyway, thanks kc. I've always gotten the feeling you love this city as much as I do... And the cable cars are as much in your bones as they are in mine.
@BobHorowitz oh Bob, I do love this city so very much… (the best part of any vacation is always returning home here). Love that we get to see the City through your lens too. You always have such a great eye for the details.
8 is my lucky number (also 3 has been pretty great too). Didn’t mean to offend the other numbers. They are all good in their own ways.
@exkclamation
*chuckles* I'm sure the other numbers will forgive you.
Btw, I am partial to 4, which is like saying blue is a favorite color - an obvious choice. 17 gets no love from anybody.
@BobHorowitz I’m glad you are in compliance 😊 Great shot.
@bluejay I wish I also had audio because I love how the underground cables hum as they are pulled non-stop through the streets.
@BobHorowitz Do you have any photos of the central machinery? It blew my mind to realize that, of course, there are giant engines and wheels that are pulling and winding up all the cables.🤩
@bluejay I do. The cable car powerhouse / barn is one of my favorite places in all of San Francisco. It's amazing to see how 510 horsepower motors pull miles of cable and a dozens of cars throughout the streets. Also, the smell of machine oil in the powerhouse is intoxicating.
I will post a picture in my main timeline.
Haha, that’s like if inhabitants of Rostock are required to post a picture of the Warnemünde lighthouse every year. Haha that would be .. erm .. wait .. oh sh*t… 😳
That used to be such a busy block, Bob! I remember slices at Blondie's in particular.
@TheEddieShow Yup. This was taken in December, in the late afternoon on a weekday. The street was quiet and there were very few tourists lined up, waiting for the cable cars.
Last year, 2/3 of the storefronts were vacant. But it's coming back. I just did a Google search of the changes:
AT&T: Returning to its former location at the One Powell St. building.
The RealReal: Returning to its former 253 Post St. location (near Powell).
Off the Grid: Opened a 30,000-sq-ft space in the former Uniqlo location at 111 Powell.
TIAT (The Intersection of Art & Technology): Immersive space at 151.
Best Bookstore: Opened on Powell Street.
Pop Mart: Opened at 200-216 Powell St.
And Jollibee is opening a chicken restaurant on Hallidie Plaza.
Other recent additions: Nintendo, Shoe Palace, Nooworks, and the café The Wild Fox.
Additionally, Uniqlo is returning to the area at a new location around the corner, at Fourth and Market Streets, in the former Old Navy flagship store.
What's in the old Woolworth's/Gap building? Or is that 1 Powell?
@TheEddieShow One Powell is across the street, other side of the cable car turnaround, on the corner of Hallidie Plaza. That's where the AT&T store will return.
The old Gap Store is still vacant... Or at least it was the last time I walked past. Haven't seen plans for it yet.
The best news is that the giant, empty Westfield Mall / San Francisco Centre was just resold to a developer who promises to redevelop it into a mix of offices, retail, and residents. This will probably take years to happen but it's nice to see the forward direction there.
@BobHorowitz @TheEddieShow Ah, I'd missed the news about the Westfield Mall. And I didn't know one tenant is still fighting the eviction.
Still nothing certain about what will be done with the big Macy's, it seems.
@jeridansky @TheEddieShow Yup... I saw that article. SFist is on my RSS news feed.
Residences in former malls are trending. Usually tiny, but convenient.
@TheEddieShow Living in a mall is a great idea. I too wish to have a gentle music playing when I walk out my front door 👍
Seriously though, plans are underway to turn the Stonestown Mall into a mixed use community. I'll see if I can dig that up.
Edit: here you go... A website with sliding before and after pictures of Stonestown:

I believe that law also stipulates the posting of a certain bridge. In the fog.
@EricMartin Roger that. I have one of those photos lined up and ready to go.
@BobHorowitz welp shit im going to jail arent i
@pmonks There's still time. Like taxes, the deadline is April 15th.
@BobHorowitz Wait. What are “taxes”? 🤔
@pmonks Disregard my previous reply.
You're going to jail.
@morgan I'll come back to this. I need to take a hike to 24th Street and do some grocery shopping. Otherwise we starve tonight 😊
@morgan
And that triggeded a Google search...

@morgan What a fascinating old article, Morgan... With facts, whimsy, and flights of fantasy (I chuckled reading "the cable system, practically unknown in England, is almost universal in the United States.")
I also got sidetracked following all the other links in the article.
Thank you for pointing me to your blog post. Much appreciated!
