Currently writing a self-hosting guide for newbies, showing off the beauty and ease of #YunoHost.

Part 2 (step-by-step installation and post-installation) will be super visual. I tried to keep things simple but I still have 27 - yes TWENTY-SEVEN - screenshots. I'll keep #AltText relevant to each step on a need to know basis or else it will turn into a novel... and will be too overwhelming for people using screen readers.

Aiming to get it published by Wednesday AKA the one year anniversary of the start of my own self-hosting adventures with YunoHost.

This is the guide I wish I had had back in the day... I would have started A LOT sooner. I'm basically writing it to my old self, hoping it will be useful for others 🥹

@teapot_ben hahaha that's what I was worried about.

But I also have a rather hilarious (for me) anecdote where I set up a test YunoHost instance to install Sharkey... I wanted to log in to check things under the hood because I was having weird error messages... and I panicked that my super strong password didn't work, I kept getting an error message... I reset things on Hetzner... still no access. I tried everything under the sun... and then I remembered YunoHost disables root access by default 🤪​

Anyway thank you for the grace and patience I know what I wrote about SSH sounds like blasphemy to a sysadmin 😅​

@nohaironheed yup... but I also think it's because the Fediverse does not penalize posts with external links... unlike other platforms that want to keep users locked inside their feeds. I posted the same thing a few weeks ago... on the Fediverse (high engagement) and on Bluesky (where I have 1.1k followers). TOTAL CRICKETS on Bluesky, like 0 likes and 0 comments... despite the 1100+ followers. I think they subtly hide posts with links...

Disclaimer: I find it a little tacky to talk about metrics on the Fediverse. That is NOT why I am here.

BUT! It's worth saying out loud that I found a real community here that I am immensely grateful for.

The lack of algorithms - a mysterious black box determining which posts get seen - is a big bonus to me...

I spend hours writing articles... that people now REALLY read (unlike on Big Tech platforms, where my blog posts would be seen by 3-4 people because... god forbid you include a link to an external site).

Ghost v.6 has new metrics built in... I was shocked to see the number of visitors to my first post about YunoHost: 955!

So even if I find it tacky to discuss numbers, this is not to brag. My main intention is to dispel any myths about Big Tech platforms... writers and creatives often say that they HAVE to be on X or Instagram or TikTok because that's where their audience is. Well, all Big Tech platforms have finicky, mysterious algorithms. I was on Twitter for 14+ years and none of my links ever got 955 visitors in 12 hours. So I wanted to put this out here to say:

ANOTHER WAY IS POSSIBLE.

And it's even better than the old way.

Real community. Real engagement. Without surveillance capitalism.

What's not to love about this?

This guide is intended for true newbies who are curious about self-hosting some essential digital services. I'm hoping to dispel some myths about self-hosting and make it appear accessible to all. Working on the second draft of my "self-hosting for newbies" guide (part 1 of 4 that is) and it’s hilarious how many side notes I’m putting in for sysadmins.

They may be triggered by reading it… but hey it’s a guide meant to be for TRUE NEWBIES, I need to keep things simple and accessible 😅

I still know very little but it’s a miracle to see the things I manage to self-host (eternal gratitude to @yunohost)
