Servers described as "Glitch Mastodon" or "Hometown Mastodon" work just like Mastodon but have additional features such as larger post sizes, rich text formatting or local-only posts.
Mastodon's server software is free and open source, so programmers can tweak it to make their own versions. (Untweaked Mastodon is often called "Vanilla Mastodon".)

To be clear, these lists aren't general lists, they're curated lists on fedi.garden (so the listed servers have to be compatible with the seven points at https://fedi.garden/about-this-site ).
@FediTips Vanilla is a terrible name for standard Mastodon, because what Vanilla Ice did, was take the standard bass riff from Under Pressure and add one note to it. If anything, Mastodon with additions should therefore be called vanilla.
