The N-Judah Streetcar
Powell Street Station
December 13th, 2025, 2:13 p.m.
A 1 second exposure, handheld.

Notice there are no trees... which is a funny thing I discovered last night, confirmed by thumbing through the 1500 photos I've posted in the last 3 years. Out of all those 1500 photos, only a dozen or so have significant trees in them. Sure, there's an odd branch or two. But there are no trees.

Am I a monster? An orc?

#photography #MUNI

A snapshot taken on the platform of an underground Muni transit tunnel, taken while I was heading home from SantaCon.

The photo shows a blurry streetcar streaking past the platform while a blurry young man in a yellow tufted down jacket walks towards the boarding area. It's a colorful photo, with tons of yellow on the ceiling and along the platform edge. The streetcar has orange streaks and purple signage, and the overhead station sign is bright green.

In the photo, everything moving is blurry... and everything that is supposed to be stationary - like the ceiling and walls and floor - is not. This is a good thing.

@frederic_edler I'm still laughing at this discovery I made last night. Someone had said they could recognize my photos instantly without knowing I was the photographer... So I looked for a tell, a common theme, because I thought every photo look different from the previous one.

The tell, apparently, is no trees.

@BobHorowitz meanwhile in tokyo this man is angry with me for being close to the barrier the stands a meter tall between the platform and the train... dont know what foreigners have been doing in tokyo while i've been away, but the staff are now terrified for them!

black and white photograph along a tokyo metro platform, in this case tsukiji. a member of the platform staff is running towards the camera gesticulating...

@BobHorowitz clearly! when the law wears its hat at a jaunty angle one has an obligation to scoff, does one not?

@BobHorowitz For a Chicagoan, San Francisco has very few trees outside of the parks.

@clonezone This is sadly true. We are very good at poles with overhead wires but totally lacking in the tree department.

@BobHorowitz On the overhead wires front, I had a close brush with death when I was standing on a curb in North Beach when one of the electric busses went over a bump, causing a yank on the wires connecting to a lamp post and the glass cover for the light came crashing down 3 feet from me.

@BobHorowitz In ‘95, I was working at the top of 75 Hawthorn, which has 2 story tall diagonal windows with views in all directions. One day, I’m looking out over the city and I had a sudden realization that there’s no trees. Just a weird thing at the time.
