Tiny Mastodon Tip About Globalisation 🌍 mastodon

On Mastodon, there isn't an algorithm to restrict your reach to your own country or region when you post.

Additionally, many people post in English, even when it's not their native language.

If you post a comment or question
that is related to a specific region of the world, please specify which one, and don't assume people worldwide will know this acronym or reference.

You will have a better chance to
get the answers you seek, and more boosts from people living in different regions of the world.

Also consider adding a hashtag relevant to the country or region you are posting about.

Keep in mind the Fediverse is global! 🌏🌍🌎✨

@Em0nM4stodon Good points! I follow folks who are not from the US but post in English. Some post in German and I use the translate feature. My experience is richer from seeing their perspectives

This is the way 👍

Side note: Mona App has the translation feature setup with just a swipe left on post, It's wonderful! I use it all the time!

@Em0nM4stodon Is there a way to split someone feed by language? Like let's say I want to follow Alice who speak english and esperanto. Can I follow only post using the english language?

@dallo

It's not exactly what you asked, but there is a way to see posts only in some languages that you choose in the public timelines.

To adjust this, from the Mastodon web interface, you can go to "Preferences" > "Preferences" > "Other" and in the "Filter languages" section you can check only the languages that you want to see for the public timelines. Then at the bottom click on "Save changes".

Other than that, some mobile apps like Mona have a Filter feature for profile's timelines, but there isn't a filter per language there. Perhaps a feature to request if this is something that you frequently need.

@Em0nM4stodon

I admit that I don’t always do this, but my country is mentioned in my profile.
