A story of triumph in 3 acts.
When I hear woodpecker I think about the little guys in my backyard. They look this way and are called Bunt Specht.

There is also Schwarz Specht with a red head I've seen only once in the wild. And Grün Specht I've seen only in Weltvogelpark Walsrode (That one does not count) Yours over there seem to look all very different (in color or size).
@cloudless_sky Woodpeckers (And buntspecht!) are some of my favorites. Big personalities, lots of opinions, and fun to watch. I love how do many are simple variations of each other.
@danmccullough Boosted for the photos, followed for the excellent #AltText! :D
@danmccullough
At least you provided that handy tray to give it a foothold!
Lovely bird. Lovely little story.
@danmccullough If you allow yourself to anthropomorphize a bit, you can almost see it smiling in the last picture😀
@danmccullough A lot of people tell me they have Red-headed Woodpeckers at their feeder. Yet they haven't looked them up to see what they look like😉
I surmise the name was already taken so another name was needed😆
@lfisk I still botch it all the time. Red-headed Woodpecker, version 2 perhaps. 😅
@danmccullough @lfisk I can't keep the name straight, but “woodpecker that decimates feeder seeds” is pretty close too!
@danmccullough Alpha and Beta versions👍
Used to have Red-headed around when I was a kid. I've only seen 2 now in the past ~30 years😑
