I am so stubborn about not using AI.
You have no idea.
I will even go as far as writing my own texts, drawing my own images, writing my own code, and reading the whole article or email just by myself. Crazy stuff.

@Em0nM4stodon Just as I do. I do not actively use #AI for my own purposes. Yet I know that #AI is used in other software, security systems etc. which I am forced to use, more or less - meaning it is difficult to avoid #AI completely.
@Em0nM4stodon @nixCraft "Here's to the crazy ones"
@Em0nM4stodon Oh, so you are a master of all arts, just like Da Vinci. Hope you get a Nobel soon! 🤦
It's so XXth century. Charming.
@Em0nM4stodon I still stand strong that caves are a very nice place to get back into... But how will we find them if we don't ask any AI model where they are, right? And then we will need it to figure out how to sleep and paint on walls! How could the cavemen do such amazing feats without any instructions?!
(Are we devolving? :O)
@Em0nM4stodon What will you do when AI devices replace smartphones and laptops in the future?
@Em0nM4stodon me too, but I've got a disabled colleague who's having a hard time with the standard PC keyboard. AI actually deciphers his typing, so he can just type the begining of each word.
So far, I haven't seen any other use for the clankers.
@Em0nM4stodon
I am not as disciplined as you on this; I use AI at work (when it makes sense) and experiment with and blog about open-source AI outside work, but when it comes to writing posts I struggle through putting together the words myself without AI. Anything less is an affront to authenticity. As an introvert, stringing together good prose does not come easily, but that has to be better than putting something out there as my own when it is just a string of statistically probable tokens, posing as a human interaction.
@Em0nM4stodon utter madness! If you write things yourself how will you easily embed a string of factual inaccuracies claimed with excessive confidence.
@Em0nM4stodon I gave up. after 20 years of doing all by myself, now I use AI to do my work and enjoy more time with my family. my kids are more important for me. and I do introduce them how to use AI to help them learn, discover, use it the right way, so they don't fall in the trap of the majority that think AI can do all for them and they can vegetate, slaves to the corps. I think that the best way is to find balance of using it in such a way that it maximizes what you learn, saves you time to use it for what is more important, and very important, use it with AI that is not invasive and integrated in everything you use, like M$ wants, but available only in isolated apps that when closed, stay closed.
@Em0nM4stodon Same here 🤪
@Em0nM4stodon Is it stubbornness or just human nature aka curiosity?
@Em0nM4stodon Wow, what a radical move! So there are at least two of us who do the same!
@Em0nM4stodon So, using your brain? Way to go!😂👍
@Em0nM4stodon but why? "Back in my day I used to walk 5 miles in the snow uphill to get to school" kinda vibes. Why make things harder on yourself when you don't have to? I can get the whole "I don't want OpenAI/Grok/Gemini/ etc to have my information" aspect of it but you can train and self host your own models. Tuning Image AI models like lora's and tweaking things in ComfyUI or Automatic 1111 takes dev skill, writing out proper coding for agents takes dev skill. I can understand that people just get on ChatGPT and say generate me an image of a cat and Voila, but you can't keep taking away the credit of the nerds who really geek about this stuff. "Work smart not hard" in a way where yeah, you can totally write out every email as you always would for the past years/decades. Or...you could write an amazing system prompt to respond to an email using context engineering with other emails you've written so it responds exactly like you. There's a fun to it lol
@Em0nM4stodon
The day I let generative "AI" into my life is the day I have an alien parasite in my brain eating away my humanity. I have enough cognitive issues to let a damn company take last of it by letting a guess machine take over a single thinking task that keeps my brain as healthy as it can be.
@Em0nM4stodon I bought a typewriter.
@bservies This is beautiful 🥰📬
@Em0nM4stodon Call me crazy, but I like to do that stuff myself, also.
@Em0nM4stodon if you don't use it (brain) you lose it

@Em0nM4stodon
For getting to the fact when time is of the importance AI is a life saver.
The ancient Greeks wanted to negotiate with a country so they went to speak to their king.
They eventually found him and he declared he milked his own cow, weeded his own garden, built his own shed, and even had sex with his own wife.
Seems to have been a very "personal engagement with life" person.
@Em0nM4stodon Ermagerd. How do you find time to sit staring at the wall?
@Em0nM4stodon I'm with you. I post descriptions of what I'm selling on eBay that I've written myself!
@Em0nM4stodon You're an extremist.
@Em0nM4stodon when do we get to see those drawings you're talking about?
@Em0nM4stodon It's kind of odd to reflect that forty years ago I was a gung-ho technophile who wanted computing power to be ubiquitous and loved gadgets. Now? I'm a 60-year-old "selective Luddite". I still like coding, and have a collection of synths in my studio... but NO live TV or streaming services, no "digital assistants" allowed in my house, and definitely NO interest at all in using AI, except when it makes sense for me to do so (I'm still waiting for that moment to arrive).
@Em0nM4stodon I'm with you. We must carry this torch and discuss it, regulate it, and protect our society and environment - yesterday!
I had this image in my mind for a while as something I wanted to draw and it felt real good figuring out how to draw it in Inkscape instead of using an image generator, especially because of how well an image generator would have worked for the idea (established characters and context but shuffled)
@Em0nM4stodon
OMG, not writing your own texts.
@Em0nM4stodon Microsoft Teams wants me to interact with "Copilot". Confluence wants me to "Ask Rovo". Microsoft Outlook wants me to interact with "Copilot". Amazon Web Services wants me to interact with "Q". Datadog (logging and reporting tools) wants me to interact with "Bits". Excel wants me to interact with "Copilot". A grocery shopping app on my phone wants me to "Ask AI". Microsoft Notepad -- yes, fricking *Notepad* -- wants me to interact with "Copilot".
None of this was here 2 years ago. Most if not all of this was missing a year ago. I didn't feel a sudden urge to have a cliche-ridden dialogue with my grocery store app or my logging tools 10-15 months ago, so it's not at all difficult for me to turn them down now.
@Em0nM4stodon we are at least original!
@Em0nM4stodon Me too!
I'm sure there's dozens of us!
@Em0nM4stodon
At work they do things like arbitrary minimum character counts to try to force us to use Copilot to pad out what we put in.
I use https://lipsum.com to generate filler instead. It's better since it's only vaguely English shaped and therefore can't cause negative value by looking sensible but being subtly or dangerously wrong.
Your stuff must be disgustingly human.
@Em0nM4stodon @bigzaphod Check this out! I haven't tried it yet, but this was my upcoming weekend morning plan..
https://github.com/zoicware/RemoveWindowsAI/?tab=readme-ov-file
@Em0nM4stodon No AI here either. #NoAI
I'll just post this #AIderangementsyndrome to see if has already popped up elsewhere out of curiosity.
@Em0nM4stodon Just like the old days.
@Em0nM4stodon I'm with ya. Just drawing shit out of my brain for funsies and making a beautiful mess of the paper. Or writing and smudging all over the page.
The power of spite! If only we could harness it to power cities and cars and maybe we could tackle climate change too.
@Em0nM4stodon imagine the nerve, audacity
the stubbornness is giving pickle jar vibes, but like… respect. if you can do it yourself, why let the robots in? keep your vibe organic, bestie!
@Em0nM4stodon Living like a caveman.
Which, of course, is healthier than living like a human today.
#NoAI
I fear this joke will only be funny for like one year or two, and then nobody will get it anymore because it will truly be considered crazy stuff to write, draw, code, or read just using your own brain 🫠
I hate this AI-dystopian timeline :blobcat_thisisfine:
@Em0nM4stodon It's not a joke as far as I am concerned.
My company is pushing us to use AI, even providing us with access to Copilot Pro (or whatever it is called).
I refused.
And got strange looks.
And got said "you should try you know, it's so great!".
Didn't answer with what I had in mind at the moment, didn't want to get fired.
@Em0nM4stodon Nah, the AI bubble will burst when everyone realises it nonsense. It’ll be like 3D TVs, it’s a fad that will go away in a few years.
@Em0nM4stodon No, after a year or two everyone will be pretending they were always thinking the same as you were.
@Em0nM4stodon Same here, have not touched AI and will keep it that way.
I always say: "A text that is not worth writing is a text not worth reading." When one generates something using LLM's it takes the soul out of it. The personality is gone and replaced by something else that is not the 'writer' of the text.
@Em0nM4stodon
Until society splits into the A.i.-loi and MoreLucks?
It will always be funny.
Fewer people will get it.
A t-shirt that would be a great filter would be "I write my own emails."
People who smile when they see it are the fun ones.
@funnymonkey Now that's some brilliant idea 😏
@Em0nM4stodon One of the reasons I lost motivation to keep doing pixel art was that I hated when people would post AI imitations of the things I'd made. Or telling me that I'm dumb for not having AI draw for me. I've been too depressed to write code outside of work for a couple of years now, for similar reasons. I still don't use AI myself - I've just stopped doing creative things on the computer because I get depressed.
I've taken up drawing with pencil and paper. But I will not be posting any of that publicly; that is only for family and close friends. I'm not very good at it, but at least it is my own expression.
@Em0nM4stodon PS: Here is a small tortoiseshell butterfly. Artisanally crafted organic pixels. Yes, I screwed up its abdomen.
Don't worry, Em - just have the earplugs ready for when the bubble bursts.
(Sadly mainly to the detriment of those who should not suffer but will.)
@Em0nM4stodon children are saying "that's AI" to fake or nonsensical things. If your product is synonymous with bullshit, it's probably not going to last very long.
I'm personally more concerned about the infrastructure we're putting in place for it. With so much higher education focusing on that, I don't think it will go away any time soon. I learned about "underwater datacenters" yesterday, and it honestly just makes me so angry.
I wish I had the luxury to be stubborn about AI. As a displaced father, I just want to provide for my kids. Access to tech is a struggle, let alone the choice to use AI or not. #refugeelife
@Em0nM4stodon Co-pilot is always asking to rewrite my stuff, even short emails. Irritating. ⌨️
The radio had a fluff piece today about trying to cut all #AI out of your life. They had a reporter who had previously tried to live according to Old Testament rules and wrote a book about that. The reporter was trying to do things like buy products only if they didn't use A.I. price adjustments. Basic participation in society was not plausible.
I value your contribution. This reply is to let you know the character displayed as an object-not-found error (a rectangle with an X).
I like being a Power NonUser
@Em0nM4stodon Me too. I'm a donkey on the edge.
@Em0nM4stodon Hear, hear! I can do most things faster "by hand" than by trying to get "help" from AI. Just give me paper and writing/drawing tools!
I have yet to find anything that will darn my handknitted socks.🧶🪡
I wish I had luxury of choice. In Gaza, we struggled for electricity, let alone AI access. Humanity over tech, always.
@Em0nM4stodon yes this exactly.
If i was using AI (like for end of year reviews at work) it’s likely a sign the underlying exercise itself is so worthless wasn’t ever worth doing in the first place.
@Em0nM4stodon Wow, that's huge!
@Em0nM4stodon @\grok can you summarize this toot for me?
@Em0nM4stodon You’ll love this then! https://www.phoronix.com/news/Linux-Foundation-Agentic-AI
@bcon @Em0nM4stodon Frightening corporate capture and utter disregard for the community that has no place in free software. Makes me feel ill.
