I'm this context, foreign-owned matters too.
Regulators are in a bind because they can threaten to block ordinary users' access to platforms (VPNs etc notwithstanding) but can't compel foreign corps to do anything, and they often ignore fines. If regulators then do block them, it's a vote loser.

The current system is suitable for those who have a recognizable website and that's it.
Fraudsters can verify the eloonmuskcom website for themselves, while people without a website (or whose website is not recognizable) cannot verify anything.
Mastodon should copy the system from Discord. I think there should be a way to verify accounts from other services (Spotify, YT, Steam/GOG, Instagram)

Of course! Our leaders are completely incompetent at understanding where the checks and balances lie and where fascism penetrates our lives; they are utterly incompetent at protecting us.

The State as phenomena cares only about the sheets of accounting balances at best.
So if something is offered "for free" from accounting perspective, it is better from state POV than something that requires expenses, even if payment in control is necessary.
Other thing that state expects from social media is automatic megaphone mode when posts delivered to all citizens who use the same social media (usually by algorithm).

@Mastodon i agree. But the Mastodon manifesto is unfit and too political to be used. Half of it couldn't be digested by an average Catholic for instance. Lack the neutrality that the Net Neutrality stands for. They should make their own Fediverse ecosystem among other stuff. They should have a whole IT department for managing this part of existing and communicating their work. And also make it so the Nations can take is as off the shelf products.

@Mastodon While I support this initiative I do believe it is up to Mastodon to proof itself. People I talk to think Bluesky is the easier alternative. That said the federated structure should appeal to government agencies and somebody should say they are at least obliged to provide coverage
