What I’ve noticed in recent years is that people really love the opportunity to engage in bigotries they were quietly or secretly holding onto once they feel they have a social go-ahead to be in the open about it. That was clearly the case with white supremacists, homophobes, etc. but it’s also the case with “left” people who have intensified rhetoric against individuals based on age, weight, disability, national origin, etc. (1/2)
One of the hallmarks of fundamentalism is reducing complex situations to a b & w analysis. Everything is simple when you have a scapegoat. When some marker about an individual rather than their deeds is your basis for hatred. I’m not saying to empathize with Nazis. I’m saying be on guard for the bigotries some are deepening in right now. #Fascism #USpol (2/2)
